In chapter 9, Freedman and Barnouin delve further into the political side of the food industry, focusing on how the US Department of Agriculture, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the US Food and Drug Administration don't care about public health, but rather help animal agriculture. Freedman and Barnouin ask you to reclaim your health and to see through the lies of these agencies. In the tenth chapter, "Don't Be a Pussy," the authors talk about the transition from an unhealthy lifestyle, including processed food, sugar, meat, etc., to a healthy "Skinny Bitch" lifestyle. They admit that the first month will be quite hard, but ask for you to step up and take it, in order to be rewarded in the end. Finally, food is discussed in chapter 11, where they list acceptable food and provide a month's worth of menus to help with the transition.
The Discussion: Here are a couple discussion questions for the week. I look forward to chatting with you guys!
1. Freedman and Barnouin mention several agencies and government organizations whose guidelines should be questioned in order to be healthy. Are there any agencies or organizations that you do trust, and why?
2. There is a sample meal plan in chapter 11. Are any of you following it? If so, how's it going?
The Assignment: Please finish the book for our discussion on Monday, August 13.

I just wanted to say that the book changed my life forever ! I went vegetarian the day I read it over 2 years ago. It was the best decision I ever made !
ReplyDeleteI have been vegan for about 10 months now.
After listening to the lectures at the Boston Vegetarian food festival over the past 2 years, I decided it was time to go vegan.
Veganism is the only way to go !
I initially read the book two years ago when I was STILL eating poultry ~ didn't phase me. Late last year, I made the decision to change my lifestyle for my health and well being. Since becoming a Vegetarian I recently read the book again! This time it make so much sense ~ I'm so much healthier and happier as a Vegetarian!
ReplyDeleteI have not been following the sample meal plans exactly as they are written. I have been taking the samples and using them as inspirations to add to my own food. Since going vegan, I am making the best food and getting creative with recipes to make sure that I am eating the healthiest way possible.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest problem is eating out in restaurants and finding food that is vegan.
Go vegan....and nobody gets hurt:o)
It worries me that gov't agencies' guidelines might not quite be what I think. I just do the best I can as far as organic foods. I especially love seeing 2 different organic seals on a product!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I had this book on my coffee table and my roommate (a "mostly vegetarian" as she says) picked it up and read it in 2 or 3 sittings. And she became vegan!! I love having a completely vegan house now. Her reasons are purely for health, but that's a great reason. It's still cruelty-free eating and she is so much happier and healthier now!
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the discussion so far. I followed the sample menu a couple years ago, and I definitely noticed a difference. I'm just not a big fan on following a set plan. Things get in the way, and I usually don't have all of the ingredients. Although, I will try to follow the basic guidelines. I hope everyone's having a good week!

Susan Bran says: Hey! After I read Skinny Bitch the first time I tried to follow the meal plans. It didn't really work out for me b/c at that time I didn't know how to cook. After reading the book again for this book club, I have tried several recipes, but have not followed the plan day by day.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not trust very many agencies or organizations...less so if they are part of the government. I'm too cynical for that.
I can't think of an agency I trust. Even if there was one it would still pend on who was in charge and the possibility of policy changes. The only methods of production that can really be trusted are the ones directed observed by the person making the decision to trust; so unless you have your own garden I don't REALLY trust it. I mean, I have to cross my fingers for the most part because I can't fit too many plants in my one bedroom apartment.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really been following any of the meal plan provided but I do intend to look it over for ideas.
I just bought the book, "Skinny Bitch in the Kitch". Great recipes in it!! Can't wait to try the marinara sauce recipe!!
