The Summary: Happy Friday everyone! I have recently arrived in San Diego, Calif., which is gorgeous. I hope everyone else has a fun Easter weekend planned as well!

Thanks for our discussion this week, in which we talked about our favorite books and movies with an animal-rights message, as well as animal sanctuaries and rescuing animals. As to the first discussion question, I recently received How to Train Your Dragon from Netflix, which I heard has a great animal-rights message. It recently won Best Feature Film from HSUS at the annual Genesis Awards, and I really look forward to watching it. Have any of you seen it yet? What did you think?

I'll now leave you to enjoy the weekend, and will pick up this Monday with our final discussion of Vegan's Daily Companion.

  1. "How to Train Your Dragon" is really quite sweet. I agree it has a pretty strong animal rights' message. The humans attack the dragons not understanding that they take the village's livestock and food because they are essentially slaves to a much bigger dragon/monster/creature/thing. Once they have this understanding, the humans help free the dragons and develop a symbiotic relationship. It, of course, take the compassion of a young person to open everyone's eyes (sound familiar, Vegans?).

The film reminds me of other animals people fear... I know people who fear dogs because they were bitten once. How was the dog treated? Did the person do something to provoke the dog without realizing it? Are the owners abusive to the dog causing it to have behavioral issues? There are a number of enemies we create due to a lack of understanding.

Aside from that, the main dragon character sort of reminds me of my cat. Very feline and full of personality!

The movie was actually pretty emotional for me, but, I'm glad I saw it.
